Our 7 Favorite Strains of Weed

different strains of weed

There are so many different types of weed out there, it can be hard to know where to start. Which strain should you try first? What type of high can you expect from different strains?

Whether you’re delving into the world of weed for the first time or you’re a seasoned pro, we’ve got you covered. Here are seven of our favorite strains of weed — each with its own unique characteristics.

What’s a Strain?

In its simplest form, a strain is a way to categorize the species and origin of particular varieties of marijuana plants. Historically, weed cultivators and enthusiasts have divided marijuana into three strains: indica, sativa and hybrid.

The history of strains. In 1753, the father of modern taxonomy, botanist Carl Linnaeus, coined the name cannabis sativa in his Species Plantarum. Some 30 years later, European naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck expanded on Linnaeus’ work, naming a second strain, cannabis indica.

Sativa, originating in Africa and Central Asia, naturally grows in hot, dry climates. Sativa plants can grow as high as 12 feet. Fast-growing indica is native to Afghanistan and Turkey, and it thrives in harsh climates.

While sativa is commonly thought to be energizing and Indica mellowing, weed is nothing if not nuanced. Everything from THC levels to terpenes to your own personal body chemistry can influence how a particular strain affects you.
