How Much Is an Ounce of Weed?

an ounce of weed

Here’s a fun fact: When purchasing cannabis flower, it’s normally measured by the ounce. But what exactly does an ounce of weed look like, and how do you know if it’s enough — or too much?

Luckily for you, you don’t have to be a math wiz to figure out this puzzle. We’ve put together an easy guide on what an ounce of weed is, what other volumes you can purchase, and how to figure out which is right for you.

How Much Is an Ounce of Weed?

Marijuana is measured by volume, and an ounce is just that — the quantity of cured buds that weighs one dry-weight ounce. While the volume itself can vary a little based on the density and moisture content of the buds itself, this usually amounts to two handfuls, or 28 grams.

A joint usually contains one gram of weed, so an ounce of weed would let you roll about 28 joints. If you use a bong or pipe, you’ll probably get fewer uses, but it really just depends on how tightly you pack your bowl. One gram equaling one joint is a good rule of thumb.

In general, an ounce is considered to be a pretty large amount to purchase at once. Here in Oregon, you’re legally allowed to purchase up to two ounces of marijuana in a day. Always double-check the local laws and guidelines before putting in an order.

The average cost of an ounce of weed ranges from $160 and $350. The type of strain, growing practices, rarity and location can all influence the price. States like ours, which have established medicinal and recreational programs, tend to offer lower prices than places that are just starting out with their marijuana programs.

What Other Volumes Can I Buy?

Marijuana can be bought in different increments, from a gram all the way up to a pound (though that tends to be for wholesalers, not average customers.) You’ll usually find marijuana offered by these weights:

  • One gram of weed is usually enough for one joint. Sometimes dispensaries also offer a two-gram bag.
  • An eighth of weed is an eighth of an ounce, or about 3.5 grams. This volume is where you start to see some savings, because a lot of stores will offer incentives to buy higher quantities.
  • A quarter of an ounce is seven grams.
  • Half an ounce of weed is 14 grams. If you smoke one joint every day, this amount would last you about two weeks.
  • An ounce is usually the largest amount you can buy (though like we mentioned before, in Oregon it’s two ounces). You’ll normally see the biggest savings when purchasing larger amounts.

How Much Weed Should I Buy?

Now that you know what to expect, you’re probably asking yourself: How much marijuana should I buy?

The answer depends on what’s important to you. If cost and savings are the most important, then buying bigger quantities is better. Many dispensaries will offer savings and incentives for purchasing in bigger amounts; for example, buying an eighth is almost always more affordable than buying three separate grams.

However, if you like to experiment with different strains, then buying a whole bunch of one type might not be appealing. If that’s the case, then purchasing smaller amounts will allow you to try different types.

As always, we recommend talking to your friendly neighborhood budtender before spending any money. These experts can help you make the right choices for your lifestyle and goals, so it’s worth taking the time to have a conversation about what you’re hoping to get out of your purchase.

Think about how often you want to smoke, the method you like to use and the effects you’d like to have. If you’re using marijuana for pain management or hoping to smoke it every day, then larger quantities would make the most sense for your goals and your wallet. If you like to smoke on the weekends or are just starting out, then smaller amounts will let you get into weed without wasting any money. After all, it would be a bummer to get stuck with a bag of something you didn’t enjoy.

If you’re new to weed, it’s best to start with smaller amounts and go up from there. While it may be more expensive in the short-term, you’ll be able to find exactly what you enjoy and then save on future purchases you can feel really confident in.

Make the Most of Your Local Dispensaries

Not only will budtenders help steer you toward the perfect strain and volume of marijuana, but they can also help save you money. Many local dispensaries offer first-time buyer discounts, loyalty programs and weekly specials. Ask the staff about any incentives that are running to help you get the most bang for your buck.

The great thing about dispensaries is that they are designed to give you the best experience possible when buying weed. The staff there are friendly, knowledgeable and ready to help you out. Dispensaries are more than just a business; they’re a hub for a community, and you’re part of it as soon as you step through the door.

That’s why it’s important to double-check what loyalty programs your local dispensary offers. You’ll earn points for every purchase you make and get to take advantage of specials that are available for regular customers. Many local dispensaries also have specific days where they run big specials, like 4/20, 7/10 and others, so keep an eye on the dispensary’s website or ask the budtenders for any upcoming events.

Starting on January 1, 2022, customers are now able to buy 2 ounces of weed.  From a gram to an ounce, there’s lots of different ways to bring home the perfect amount of flower for your lifestyle.
